Dec. 7, 2010 – The holidays can be a good time to get the family together to discuss a senior’s driving ability and agree on next steps, according to Consumer Reports Health, which provides advice on how to judge an older driver’s ability.

Consumer Reports notes that increasing numbers of Americans 70 years of age and older are still licensed to drive – a trend that is accelerating as expected as baby boomers join the senior citizen ranks.

Employing remote monitoring technology to enable the elderly to move from nursing homes and into community-based settings such as supportive housing can keep seniors safe at a substantially reduced cost, according to a new study released today.

Commissioned by Courtland HT in collaboration with its technology partner Healthsense and the NewCourtland LIFE Program, a Philadelphia-based PACE provider, the study found that safely moving 33 elderly residents from nursing homes and into NewCourtland Square, a supportive housing complex, resulted in savings of $1.85 million annually. The units at NewCourtland Square are outfitted with sensor technology to exclusively serve seniors 60 and older who are transitioning out of nursing homes.

The sensor technology provided by Courtland HT and powered by Healthsense was used to monitor the health and well-being of the participating NewCourtland Square residents for nearly two years. The combined cost of technology and staff support for the 33 residents was $288,600 for one year in supportive housing, compared to the $2.14 million total annual cost of nursing home care. The annual cost of the sensor technology alone was $39,000. FOR middle- and upper-income retirees who had the money, it was almost a no-brainer in recent years to choose living in a continuing-care retirement community. They could move, as the need arose, from independent living to assisted care to skilled nursing care — all without leaving the community.

Well-off older people like Charles W. Prine Jr. of Pittsburgh, a former home building executive, plunked down six-figure entrance fees for a spot in a spacious, well-kept colony with amenities like organized outings, prepared meals and musical performances.

“We thought it would be a great place to be,” said Mr. Prine, 84, who, along with his wife, Elizabeth, moved into an independent living unit in nearby Mount Lebanon, in southwest Pennsylvania, in 2002. “It was a kind of insurance so you could be taken care of, at the same price, when you or your spouse needed more care eventually.”

Wanted: licensed caregiver, to provide full-time, at-home care for elderly parents guaranteed to balk over a complete stranger invading the privacy of their home.

Indeed, who ever thought their home would double as a caregiver’s workplace?

People 65 or older — our fastest-growing population segment — increasingly are being persuaded, cajoled and otherwise prevailed upon by their children to open their doors to paid caregivers, whose presence redefines their home.

In some cases, the health aides are welcomed and become part of the family. In others, seniors may see them as intruders, and lash out or curse while getting bathed or fed.

Most seniors say they prefer staying at home to moving into a facility or in with relatives or friends, according to a 2007 AARP survey. Home seems to offer familiarity, privacy, independence. In some cases, people stay put because they can’t sell their house.

But spending the golden years at home often means adapting both home and mindset to accommodate live-in caregivers.
